In the cultural wasteland of the '70s, where peace and love had degenerated into sex, drugs and rock 'n roll, precious few lights beckoned to youth who met license, pornography, and drugs everywhere. Yet Providence did not wholly abandon us.

 

 

Many Catholic educators appreciate the wit and insight of C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, especially his defense of the moral law and God's existence in the first part. But a smaller number understand, or at least incorporate, these insights into their catechetical programs.

 

 

"Truth and Joy in the Catholic School" abounds when it dwells in the hearts of those who educate and administrate. "Joy," an appropriate response to the universal reality called "truth," rushes the educator on to share with his students those treasures uncovered through the pursuit of truth.

 

 

For the last several years, I have taught a moral theology class for juniors and seniors at St. Augustine Academy, where three of my children have attended school. I have always believed that young people, like all Catholics, need to see the Church's moral teachings within the proper context of love.
